Sagging Arms Not Meant For Sleeveless Dresses

By Linda Franklin

Summer is fast approaching and many of us are wondering how to stay cool in dresses or tops without revealing too much arm.  I know we should love every part of our bodies, but sometimes that’s really hard to do, especially when you’re out shopping for new summer duds. It seems everything that I like is sleeveless and that just doesn’t work as well anymore.

So now  I am on the hunt for alternatives. Clothes that has a little sleeve, but not too little or with cutouts on the shoulder.  I really like that look – it works for women of all ages.

Here’s what I came up with as I searched online.  I am so relieved there are great choices for us.  Now I can’t wait to go shopping.

Mad Men Great on TV - Not In Real Life

   by Linda Franklin

Mad Men Era - Lets Not Go Back There Linda Franklin The Real Cougar Woman
Mad Men is back and bigger than ever.  That show illustrates how political correctness was not even a small concern for the advertising salesmen of Madison Avenue when they successfully pitched their client’s brand campaigns.

The ads from the 1960s were breathtakingly unconcerned with sexism as they appealed to men’s macho side, using images of subservient women as a way to sell everything from wrinkle-free trousers to boldly patterned neckties.

The popularity of Mad Men has kept many hooked on an era when drinks were strong, cigarettes popular…and women kept firmly in their place.

In the current political climate it’s entirely possible that women’s rights are heading back to where they were in the 60′s.  Let’s stand together so that doesn’t happen.  We have come too far and worked too hard to go backwards.

Bras That Fit in 5 Steps – Throw Away The Tape Measure

by Linda Franklin

Perfect Fitting Bra - Throw Away The Tape Measure Linda Franklin The Real Cougar WomanWearing the wrong bra can be miserable.  Not only does it pinch and pull it does absolutely nothing to flatter your figure.  Eight out of ten women are wearing badly-fitted bras.  Why is it so difficult to find the right one?  Apparently, the answer to that questions is the traditional method of measuring bust size is outdated.  Using a tape measure is a waste of time because women’s bodies have changed dramatically since the system was invented in the 1930s.

The traditional method of bra-fitting, still used by most stores, involves two measurements: one from under the bust and around the ribcage, and the other from around the fullest part of the bust.

The first measurement gives the back size in inches, and the difference between the two measurements determines cup size (A denotes a difference of one inch, B of two inches and so on).

But according to a new study, this method is hopelessly out of date because it was designed to go only up to a D-cup. These days women go way beyond D’s and most wear their bras too loose on the back and too small in the cup. 80 per cent of the support given by a bra comes from the band around the middle — not the straps or the cup — and if it’s loose, you are not getting enough support.

The secret to finding the perfect fit is to take a five-step approach: assessing the length of the straps, the shape of the underwire, how well the back fits, how well the cup fits and whether the front band is in contact with the breastbone.

FIVE STEPS TO A PERFECT FIT

  1. STRAP LENGTH: You don’t need to adjust your straps to the same length on each side. Many of us have sloping shoulders, perhaps from carrying bags around on one side for years, and so it could be that one strap needs to be tighter than the other.
  2. UNDERWIRE SHAPE: If you press on the underwire of your bra, it should press on bone, not breast tissue. The underwire should sit on your ribcage, encasing your breasts but not digging into them.
  3. BACK FIT: You should just be able to fit two fingers under the band. It should feel snug — perhaps tighter than you’re used to, but not uncomfortable. If it rides up in the middle of your back, it’s too big and won’t give you enough support.
  4. CUP FIT: Nine times out of ten, women are wearing too small a cup size. You should not have any breast tissue spilling out the top of the cup — known as ‘double boob’. The average woman is now a D-cup, yet most think they are a B-cup.
  5. FRONT BAND: The middle should sit flat against the breastbone. If it’s pulling away, leaving a gap between the middle of the bra and the skin, the cup size is too small.

Do your girls a favor and take this guide with you the next time you go bra shopping.

Black Women Happier In Their Own Skin

by Linda Franklin

Black Women Happier In Their Own Skin Linda Franklin The Real Cougar WomanBlack women are happier with their bodies than white women - even if they weigh more, well that’s what a new study says. Two-thirds of overweight black women said they had high self-esteem, compared to only 41 per cent of thin or average-sized white women.  White women could learn a thing or two from this because we are never satisfied with our bodies and go to great lengths to change them.

According to the research commissioned by the Washington Post white women focus too much on what nature has given them, while black women have a ‘deeper’ appreciation of beauty.

Flat chests, skinny midriffs and size zero are boyish.  Black women say, “we’re likely to be built generously and we’re not ashamed to celebrate our curves.”  ‘We develop our own ideas about what it means to look good, rather than relying on magazines and television shows to tell us’.  The survey found, that black women do not aspire to unfeasible skinniness when they lose weight. Instead they look to emulate Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Michelle Obama, all of whom are muscular and curvy.

Nothing’s perfect – and the survey also brought out this important point.  Black women are more prone to diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure because they are more likely to be obese than white women.

The bottom line is be happy with the skin you’re in.  You have one miraculous body so treat it well and keep it healthy.  Pay attention to how you feel and know that you attract good things from a place of feeling good.

Cindy Crawford - What Have You Done?

Cindy Crawford- What Have You Done? Linda Franklin The Real Cougar WomanCindy Crawford admits she has used cosmetic enhancements. That’s unusual given the fact that she has her own skin care line called Meaningful Beauty, which brags that it’s “Cindy’s anti-aging secret”.

There’s no way to stop the natural  aging process.  It happens to all of us and it first shows up on our faces.  The cheekbones start to drop making them look lower and flatter.  The face looks more oblong losing what the doctors call the “triangle of youth”.  And, if that’s not enough, the lips turn down at the corners, creating an inverse triangle.

Today, rather than using old face lift methods to pull the skin back and eradicate wrinkles, cosmetic surgeons found that reinstating the golden triangle is what women want.  They do that by adding fillers to the cheekbone that supposedly will bring back the illusion of youth.

It is this kind of procedure that dermatologists are suggesting could be behind Cindy’s newly plumped-up cheekbones.

Women all over are doing what Cindy did and they all end up looking exactly alike.  Look at the faces the next time you are with a group of women and you will immediately pick out the ones who have been injected with the lastest filler.

I don’t know about you but when I saw this picture of Cindy I didn’t recognize her.  She has such a beautiful face, why would she want to look like every other costmetic enhanced woman.

I have no obection to wanting to look your best, just opt for the more subtle approach.  Chipmunk cheek belong on chipmunks.

Pretty Women Have Their Own Set Of Rules

Pretty Women Have Their Own Set Of Rules by Linda Franklin The Real Cougar Woman

by Linda Franklin

It's no shock that the portrayal of women in the media - young, sexy, skinny, tall - makes the rest of us feel flawed. When we look at the 40,000 or so ads that the average American is exposed to each year, it's no wonder women are feeling inadequate. The average female model weighs up to 25% less than the typical woman and maintains a weight at about 15 to 20% below what is considered healthy for her age and height. It leaves us wondering how much importance is placed on pretty in this mixed up world we live in.

Well, as it turns out, pretty counts for a lot. As much as we want to believe we are not judged on how we look, that's the very thing that opens so many doors for us. A pretty woman gets more opportunities and lots more help when she needs it. Just try getting any kind of assistance on a day when you are looking particularly frumpy - no makeup, stringy hair, sweatsuit and sneakers. If you don't believe me get all dolled and see if you are treated any differently. The more attractive version of you will always win out - it's just the way it is.

Actually, there are a whole set of different rules for the pretty woman. She can slip past velvet ropes, get preferential seating in restaurants, and even smile their way out of traffic tickets...and that's just for starters.

People assume that if a woman is attractive, she possesses other positive traits, such as kindness and intelligence," says behavioral psychologist Stephen Josephson, Ph.D., of Weill Cornell Medical College. So it's not surprising that a study conducted by Daniel Hamermesh, Ph.D., and Jeff Biddle, Ph.D., economics professors at the University of Texas and Michigan State University, respectively, revealed that "plain" people earn 1 to 15 percent less than people with average looks, who in turn earn 1 to 13 percent less than those deemed good-looking.
Job recruiters have come to learn that sending out attractive women will get a much better reaction from their clients. Whether they admit it or not, many employers feel that having pretty female employees will reflect well on their firm. And, let's face it, men want to be surrounded by pretty women.

So here's the bottom line. You can choose to fight the obvious or perhaps it would be wiser to get a few well-placed highlights and dab on a little lip gloss. This will help create an aura not only of attractiveness but also of self-confidence. When you feel good about yourself, it changes the way you carry yourself. You can noticed.
"Occasionally being pretty can backfire", says Stephen Josephson. "It's the bimbo effect. "If a beautiful woman succeeds, she often finds herself fielding insinuations that her accomplishments are based solely on her looks." And although a 2009 Journal of Applied Psychology report found that handsome people do have an edge over their less comely counterparts with regard to salaries, it turns out that intelligence trumps all.

So ladies, all is not lost - intelligence is still our most important asset. Nevertheless, I'm not ready to give up my highlights or lip gloss anytime soon.

Aging Has It's Rough Moments

By Linda Franklin - The Real Cougar Woman

Woman-looking-in-mirrorIs it true that once we hit 45 looking in the mirror becomes painful? I guess most of us would agree that it's hard to come to terms with getting older and our faces only confirm what we feel inside.

In a survey of 3,000 people done in Briton, they found just a handful of middle-aged people checked their reflection more than once a day. I find that hard to believe don't you?  Even though I may not always like what I see looking back at me, I am compelled to check myself out when I pass by a mirror.  For me that likely to be more than 10 times a day.

Vaginas Are Becoming Big Business

by Linda Franklin - The Real Cougar Woman

V power Finally the core of female womanhood is now being embraced. Celebrities are talking about it, a growing number of products are catering to it and TV ads featuring it are no longer taboo.

The vagina is becoming big business.

A generation that grew up with more graphic language and sexual images in the media is forgoing the decades-old practice of tiptoeing around female genitalia in favour of more open dialogue about it.

Power to the V: A Summer's Eve ad focused on celebrating and empowering women through its feminine products.

To reach digital-age 20- and 30-somethings, who also have shortened attention spans, marketers are using ads that are edgier, more frank and sometimes downright shocking.
