Face Lifts, Botox and Now We're Talking Voice Lifts

by Linda Franklin, The Real Cougar Woman

VoiceliftIs it our imagination or does our voice show the signs of aging just like the rest of our body?  Does it get deeper and perhaps a bit crackly? Do you find yourself clearing your throat a lot more during the day.  Oh horrors! - is our voice betraying our deep dark secrets too?

For women who think they are sounding more and more like old biddies there is a drastic measure that can be taken - a  surgical voice lift.  No, I'm not kidding.  So add voice lift surgery to the list of fixer-uppers along with botox, juvaderm, liposuction for canckles and having the wrinkles on your knees removed.

Apparently, when we are born our larynx is high up in the throat.  That reduces our chances of choking. But, as we age, the larynx gets progressively lower which causes our voices to deepen.

Other factors which can affect our voice voice range from diet, alcohol, stress and weight.  And oh no, hormones are a big influence too. Around menopause age when estrogen levels drop it causes the vocal folds to dry out.  They have even given that condition a name - menopausal voice syndrome.

But it’s not just our vocal folds that age our voice - loss of elasticity is a factor too.  Our lung capacity diminishes dramatically, dropping by 50 per cent between the ages of 20 and 80, which naturally affects the power of the voice.

There is a test to check out the health of your vocal folds.  A long rod with a tiny camera that is inserted in your mouth gives doctors a good view.  If your folds are a pearly white they are healthy.  If they are pink your voice could be straining and red signals the onset of laryngitis. Hydration is good for keeping them plump, so drink lots of water.

The voicelift surgery can cost up to $25,000.  Fat is taken from the stomach and grafted on to the vocal folds to plump them up and enhance voice performance.

As for me, well I'll be sticking to drinking more water, moderating my intake of acidic foods, keeping stress levels down and staying away from smokers.  That second hand smoke is a killer.

Comments

It seems to me that once one problem is solved then another appears with a solution. Surely a voice operation could result in permanent change? Which unlike Botox is temporary?

This operation looks like a fad to me. Also voice changes are commonly made more dramatic to cigarette smoking over many years.
