Eat Pray Love - You Have Got To Read This Book
For those of you who haven't yet read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert - run out and get a copy, you're going to love it. In my opinion, this wonderful little book is packed with life changing insights and is a must read for every woman on the planet.
What I liked most about this book was Liz's honesty and her courage. She turned herself inside out to explore the deepest recesses of her soul. Anyone who travels with her on this heart felt journey will connect to their own passions and longings through her superbly written stories.
Liz's personal transformation began after enduring a nasty divorce and a failed love affair. She could have very easily stayed home sulking, but instead, she hit the road, hoping to rediscover joy, God and the meaning of her life. How many of us have longed to do exactly the same thing?
She documents her yearlong journey in "Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia" The chosen locales may seem random, but Gilbert had a plan: She visited Italy to rediscover earthly delights, stayed in an ashram in India to spark up her spiritual life and finished her quest in Bali to learn how to combine the pleasures of the flesh with those of the soul.
Here in her own words is what Liz believes is important for all of us. "I think one of the most important beginning steps is to find some tiny corner of space in your life, some 15-minute window of silence, some little area that you can put a circle around and call sacred, and say, "This is the time and this is the space, and this is the moment where I'm going to let all this stuff go for a minute and just sit here and petition the universe, ask for peace, or just watch my breathing." And then you begin to give yourself that tiny bit of leave to ask the really dangerous, scary question of life, which is "What do I really want, and what am I here for?" I think everyone has access to that question at any moment. I have to think that. That's what all the great saints have always taught us."
The book is far from a squeaky-clean spiritual tome, that's another reason why I loved it so much. Gilbert's enthusiastic lunges at enlightenment are interspersed with bouts of depression, an impassioned love affair, meditation-induced meltdowns, a couple of crushes and a few culture clashes -- along with plenty of magic, visions and answered prayers.
Anyhow, I don't want to tell you too much because this book is a gift you need to unwrap and breathe in for yourself. It will touch your heart in the most positive way. Hope you love it as much as I did. Happy Holidays.
